NMC TO INVITE NURSE OVER VIRAL TIKTOK LIVE SHOWING PREGNANT PATIENT IN DISTRESS

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is expected to invite a nurse for further engagement next week following a controversial TikTok livestream allegedly showing a pregnant patient in distress.

The incident has sparked concerns over patient confidentiality, professional ethics and the protection of vulnerable individuals receiving medical care.

The Ministry of Health was alerted to the matter after a social media user reported the livestream, raising questions about why a healthcare worker would broadcast a patient’s condition instead of protecting her privacy and dignity.

The complainant, Dickson Assan, who reported the incident to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), said he came across the TikTok Live session in the early hours of the day and was disturbed by what he witnessed.

According to him, the person hosting the livestream, who appeared to be a nurse, was broadcasting a pregnant patient who seemed to be experiencing considerable distress.

He alleged that the host was seen rubbing the patient’s back, apparently in an attempt to comfort her, while some viewers posted inappropriate comments and ridiculed the situation.

Mr Assan further claimed that when a viewer questioned the decision to broadcast the patient’s condition, the individual was insulted by other participants.

He also alleged that the host displayed a Mobile Money (MoMo) number during the livestream and appealed to viewers for financial contributions while the patient was in distress.

In a Facebook post on Friday, October 6, the Ministry of Health’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Goodman, confirmed that the NMC was following up on the matter and was expected to invite the nurse for further discussions next week.

“The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is following up on the matter concerning this nurse. I am reliably informed that she is expected to be invited by the Council next week for further engagement,” he wrote.

The planned engagement is expected to give the Council an opportunity to examine the circumstances surrounding the livestream and address the concerns raised about the nurse’s conduct.
