Nigerian Woman Convicted of Human Trafficking Remanded for Sentencing

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a 43-year-old Nigerian woman into custody for sentencing after convicting her on charges of human trafficking and illegal entry into Ghana.

The accused, identified as Eugenia Ifeoma, pleaded guilty to two counts of human trafficking and guilty with explanation to a charge of illegal entry into the country.

According to the prosecution, led by the Ghana Immigration Service, Ifeoma, a commercial sex worker operating in Asankragua, recruited, transported, and harboured two victims aged 19 and 17 from Nigeria for prostitution.

The court heard that on March 2, 2026, the accused travelled from Ghana to Nigeria, where she met the victims’ brother, who requested that she bring his two sisters to Ghana.

Although she initially declined, prosecutors said she later agreed and financed their transportation into the country.

Upon arriving in Ghana, the victims were taken to Asankragua, where Ifeoma allegedly supplied them with condoms and demanded a daily remittance of GH¢200 from their earnings.

Prosecution further stated that the accused threatened to invoke a fetish priest against the victims if they attempted to escape.

The Ghana Immigration Service in Asankragua said it acted on intelligence that led to her arrest. Investigations subsequently revealed that she had entered Ghana through unapproved routes.

In her explanation to the court, Ifeoma said she did not know that bringing the two young women to Ghana under those circumstances constituted an offence.

However, the trial judge ruled that her explanation did not amount to a legal defence, convicted her, and remanded her into custody pending sentencing scheduled for June 29, 2026.
