Nationwide Strike Imminent as SSNIT Hotel Sale Sparks Labour Protest
Organized Labour is poised to initiate a nationwide strike today in protest against the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT)’s proposed sale of its 60% stake in four hotels.
The move comes after SSNIT announced the cancellation of the sale to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, on Friday, in response to threats of a strike by Organized Labour. Rock City Hotel subsequently withdrew its bid for the purchase.
Despite SSNIT’s termination of the transaction, Organized Labour remains steadfast in its decision to proceed with the strike.
Dr. Eliasu Mumuni, National Secretary of UTAG, expressed disappointment, alleging a betrayal of trust by SSNIT. He claimed that SSNIT disregarded their warnings and objections.
“When Organized Labour issued an ultimatum, the NPRA intervened, putting the transaction on hold. Subsequently, Organized Labour stepped back quietly. However, just when it seemed the issue was settled, NPRA granted approvals,” he informed Citi FM.
“Yet again, SSNIT publicly announced the termination of the transaction on Monday, July 15. This breach of trust compels us, as part of the broader Organized Labour front, to remain vigilant,” Dr. Mumuni asserted.
“We believe it’s time to scrutinize the structure of the SSNIT board. Current members should be replaced to restore trust and transparency,” he concluded.
