Morocco Advance to World Cup Round of 16 After Dramatic Penalty Shootout Win Over Netherlands

Morocco reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after beating the Netherlands on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw at Monterrey Stadium, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerging as the hero in the shootout.
The Atlas Lions recovered from going behind to Cody Gakpo’s second-half goal before substitute Issa Diop headed home a late equaliser to force extra time. Bounou then saved Crysencio Summerville’s penalty before Ismael Saibari converted the winning spot kick to set up a last-16 meeting with co-hosts Canada in Houston on July 4.
The Netherlands made the brighter start but Morocco created the first clear chance after 20 minutes when Neil El Aynaoui’s header from Achraf Hakimi’s corner was brilliantly tipped away by Bart Verbruggen.
Morocco continued to threaten before the break, but Ismael Saibari was unable to reach Hakimi’s dangerous cross at the back post.
Hakimi remained Morocco’s biggest attacking threat after the restart. The captain struck the post after surging down the right before Micky van de Ven produced an excellent recovery tackle to deny him moments later.
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman responded with the introductions of Teun Koopmeiners and Wout Weghorst, and the changes paid off. Weghorst won an aerial duel before Crysencio Summerville slipped Gakpo through on goal. The forward, playing just two days after announcing the loss of his unborn son, calmly finished past Bounou to give the Dutch the lead.
The Netherlands looked set to progress until Morocco substitute Issa Diop powered home a header from Chemsdine Talbi’s cross to level the match and send it into extra time.
Verbruggen produced an outstanding close-range save to keep out Soufiane Rahimi as Morocco pushed for a winner, but the tie was eventually decided on penalties.
After both sides missed two spot kicks, Bounou denied Summerville before Saibari confidently converted the decisive penalty to send Morocco through.
Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui praised his team’s resilience after the victory.
“It was a really tough game against a really tough opponent. One of the best opponents you can face in the world. They are a top 10 team in the world and a contender to win the World Cup. The way we managed to win today is a huge acknowledgment for us as a national team,” he said.
