The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has extended its deepest condolences to the family of a young girl who tragically lost her life in a fire incident at Cantonments, Accra.
In a statement issued on 23 September 2026, the Ministry said it shared the grief of the bereaved family and all those affected by the tragedy. It noted that the incident also serves as a reminder of the need for greater vigilance in protecting children from hazards at home and in other environments.
The Ministry urged parents, guardians and caregivers to take practical steps to safeguard children. These include keeping matches, lighters and other sources of fire out of reach, ensuring electrical appliances and installations are safe, and avoiding situations where young children may be left unattended.
Households were also encouraged to observe basic fire safety measures, put emergency evacuation arrangements in place and, where age-appropriate, teach children what to do in the event of an emergency.
The Ministry noted that the Ghana National Fire Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and urged that the investigation be concluded and the cause of the fire established. It said this would help provide clarity on the tragedy and inform measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Child protection remains a shared responsibility, the statement emphasised. Families, caregivers, communities and relevant institutions all have a role to play in identifying risks, promoting safe environments and taking timely action to protect children from harm.
The Ministry once again extended its heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and wished them strength and comfort as they come to terms with the painful loss.
