Metro Mass Transit Sold 313 Buses for as Low as GH¢2,500 Before 2020 Elections – Deputy MD Alleges

Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Ltd, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, has revealed that 313 buses were declared unserviceable and sold off just two months before the 2020 general elections, with some going for as little as GH¢2,500.
Speaking on Accra-based TV3, Mr. Wiredu described the disposal as part of a “criminal scheme” known as “cannibalisation,” in which buses with minor faults were deliberately stripped of usable parts, written off as unserviceable, and sold cheaply to cronies.
According to him, internal records show that more than 400 buses were tagged unserviceable and sold between 2017 and 2018, shortly after the previous government assumed office.
“Then, two months before the 2020 election in October, another 313 buses were sold among some cronies. When I reviewed the report, I realised that a whole Metro Mass bus was sold for a paltry GH¢2,500,” Mr. Wiredu stated.
He explained the alleged modus operandi: “They would remove parts from a bus, and when it reached a certain point, they declared it unserviceable. Once declared unserviceable, they would call someone to buy it for, say, GH¢2,500 official fee.”
Since taking office in March 2025, the new management has launched a formal investigation into the matter, commissioning external auditors to review the transactions.
“We commissioned external auditors to get this issue resolved once and for all, and they submitted a draft report to us last week for our consideration,” he added.
The revelations have raised serious questions about the management of state assets, transparency in asset disposal, and potential abuse of public resources ahead of the 2020 elections.
The Deputy MD’s comments come amid broader scrutiny of public sector accountability and asset management under previous administrations. No immediate response has been received from former management or relevant oversight bodies.
