Metro Mass Transit Clarifies: 100 New Buses Primarily for Intercity Operations, Not Accra Intracity

Metro Mass Transit Limited has clarified that the 100 newly commissioned buses are primarily meant for intercity transport operations across the country and were not specifically acquired to resolve transportation challenges in Accra alone.

The statement comes in response to growing public expectations and discussions about the persistent commuting difficulties in the capital, where many passengers continue to face long waiting times, overcrowding, and rising costs during peak hours.

Head of Corporate Communications at Metro Mass Transit Limited, Mohammed Mubarak Watara, explained that the buses form part of a broader strategic initiative to revitalise and reposition the state-owned transport company.

“The buses didn’t come because of intracity operations. It was an arrangement made by the current executives as a way of resetting Metro Mass through the directive and support of the Presidency and the Ministry of Transport,” he said.

Mr. Watara noted that Metro Mass Transit originally started with a focus on intercity routes rather than intracity services. He also distinguished the company’s mandate from that of the Aayalolo bus system, which primarily handles intracity transport in Accra.

“People often mistake the operations of Aayalolo for Metro Mass. Aayalolo basically deals with intracity,” he added.

The clarification seeks to manage public expectations while underscoring the government’s broader plan to strengthen public transportation nationwide through Metro Mass Transit.

The company has assured the public of its commitment to improving service delivery on its intercity routes as part of efforts to provide more reliable and efficient transport options for Ghanaians across the country.
