Mass Burial Held for 16 Saviour Church Youth Killed in Tragic Kumasi-Accra Highway Crash

Obogu community in the Asante Akyem South Municipality held a mass burial for 16 young members of the Saviour Church of Ghana’s Youth Ministry, who tragically died in a road accident on July 28, 2025, along the Juaso-Nkawkaw stretch of the Kumasi-Accra highway. The victims, aged between 4 and 21, included two children of the church’s head pastor.
They were returning from a church congress in Koforidua when their Ford Transit bus collided head-on with a fuel tanker, which reportedly burst a tyre while overtaking, causing it to veer into the bus’s path.
Fifteen of the victims were laid to rest in a single large grave, while one child was buried separately. The ceremony, marked by profound grief, saw families, church members, and traditional leaders gather to mourn.
Church elder Mr. Boateng Asumadu described the event as “a heartbreaking moment not only for the families but for the entire community,” echoing sentiments of communal loss. Another elder, Kofi Baah, noted that some families lost multiple children, with one parent losing three.
Four survivors are receiving treatment at Juaso Government Hospital and are reportedly responding well. The Saviour Church leadership, led by Deputy Secretary Kwabena Owusu, has been coordinating with bereaved families to organize the burial, calling for unity and spiritual strength.
The accident, which claimed 17 lives according to some reports, has sparked renewed calls for stricter road safety measures in Ghana, where 7,289 crashes and 1,504 fatalities were recorded between January and June 2025.
The Obogu township remains in deep mourning, with the tragedy described as one of the darkest moments in the church’s history.
