Mahama Unveils Six-Lane Accra-Kumasi Expressway, Targets Completion by 2029

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for a new six-lane Accra-Kumasi expressway, a transformative project under the “Big Push” infrastructure programme, distinct from the ongoing dualization of the existing Accra-Kumasi highway.

Speaking during his “Thank You Tour” in the Ashanti Region on July 16, 2025, Mahama confirmed that feasibility studies and design work are underway, with sod-cutting scheduled for early 2026 and completion expected before his term ends in 2029.

The expressway, featuring three lanes in each direction, aims to reduce travel time between Ghana’s two largest cities to approximately two and a half hours, enhance road safety, and boost economic activity along the corridor.

The project, designed to cut the travel distance by 50km, is part of a broader initiative to modernize Ghana’s transportation network, including the Greater Kumasi Bypass and upgrades to Prempeh International Airport.

Mahama emphasized timely contractor payments, with a GH¢14 billion budget allocated for the Big Push in 2025, ensuring 15% mobilization funds and payments within two weeks of certificate submission.

However, posts on X reflect mixed sentiment, with some Ghanaians questioning the prioritization of a road over a railway, which could offer greater long-term benefits for connectivity and sustainability.
