Mahama Calls Emergency Cabinet Meeting Over Rising Fuel Prices

President John Dramani Mahama has convened an emergency cabinet meeting to consider urgent measures aimed at cushioning Ghanaians against rising fuel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 4, 2026, the President indicated that the meeting would focus on practical interventions to ease the burden of increasing petroleum costs.

“I have called for this emergency cabinet meeting to decide on specific measures we can take to cushion petroleum prices while we hope the conflict comes to an end,” he stated.

He explained that government is exploring adjustments within the fuel pricing structure—particularly margins—to help stabilise prices in the short term.

President Mahama assured the public that despite the global uncertainties, Ghana’s economy remains resilient.

“I can confidently tell you that the economy will not collapse because of the war in Iran,” he emphasised.

He also commended transport unions for refraining from increasing lorry fares amid the surge in fuel prices, noting that their cooperation is helping to manage the economic impact.

Recent data from the National Petroleum Authority shows that fuel prices rose sharply from April 1, 2026. Petrol increased by about 15% to GH¢13.30 per litre, while diesel went up by approximately 19% to GH¢17.10 per litre for the April 1–15 pricing window.

The planned cabinet meeting is expected to outline measures that will provide some relief to consumers as government monitors the evolving global situation.
