President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of the Upper West Region that construction of a new airport in Wa will commence soon.
The President gave the assurance after inspecting the proposed site for the project, which is expected to provide the region with a modern aviation facility.
According to President Mahama, the existing Wa Airport was originally developed as an airstrip and has over time become inadequate for the demands of modern aviation.
He said the need for a new airport had therefore become necessary to improve air transport infrastructure in the region.
Funding secured for project
President Mahama disclosed that the project is now ready to move forward following the Ghana Airports Company’s securing of the necessary funding.
“The Ghana Airports Company has secured the funds needed to implement the project,” President Mahama said.
He explained that government was not currently seeking additional funding for the project because the required resources were already available.
Procurement completed
The President further disclosed that the procurement process had been completed and contractors selected, paving the way for construction to begin in the near future.
He said the new airport forms part of government’s broader efforts to expand and improve domestic air transport while providing modern aviation infrastructure to communities across Ghana.
The project is expected to give residents of the Upper West Region improved access to air transport and support economic activity in the region.
