Mahama Assures Completion of La General Hospital by November 2027

President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of La and surrounding communities that the long-awaited reconstruction of the La General Hospital will be completed and ready for commissioning by November 2027.

The President gave the assurance after conducting a site inspection of the ongoing project, accompanied by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, commending contractors for what he described as steady progress since 2025.

“Government is fully committed to restoring healthcare access in this area. The closure of this facility has been difficult for the people of La, and we must maintain this momentum to meet our deadline,” the President stated.

The reconstruction follows the demolition of the old hospital, a development that left a major gap in healthcare delivery in the area. As a result, facilities such as the 37 Military Hospital and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital have faced increased pressure due to the influx of patients.

To address immediate healthcare needs while construction continues, President Mahama announced plans to repurpose the COVID-era emergency centre at Burma Camp into a temporary facility to handle urgent cases. The upgraded centre is expected to manage a wide range of emergencies, helping to reduce treatment delays and prevent avoidable deaths within the Accra East district.

The President noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader push toward preventive care and improved access through its free primary healthcare policy, aimed at strengthening community-level health services across the country.

He reiterated that completing the La General Hospital project remains a top priority, describing it as essential to restoring balance and efficiency within Accra’s healthcare system.
