Mahama Announces $500 Million World Bank Funding for Nationwide Feeder Road Rehabilitation

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government has secured $500 million from the World Bank to rehabilitate feeder roads across Ghana, targeting improved connectivity for rural farming communities.

The President made the disclosure on Thursday during a stakeholder engagement at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Wenchi, as part of Day 2 of his ongoing Resetting Ghana Tour.

“Government has secured 500 million dollars from the World Bank to rehabilitate feeder roads nationwide,” President Mahama told the gathering.

He explained that the funding will focus on fixing the poor state of rural roads that connect farming areas to major markets, highways, and transport hubs — a critical step toward boosting agricultural productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, and stimulating local economies.

Progress on Sunyani’s Road Network

Shifting to the Bono Region capital, the President provided updates on Sunyani’s infrastructure:

Construction has already started on the Outer Ring Road.

Designs for the Inner Ring Road are complete, with budgetary provisions now being made for its construction.

He indicated that the Inner Ring Road will be the next major priority once funding is fully aligned.

New Airport Planned for Sunyani

President Mahama also confirmed long-awaited plans for a modern replacement airport in Sunyani.

The existing facility has a runway of only 1.5 kilometres and cannot be expanded due to surrounding urban development. With the support of traditional authorities, the government has acquired new land for a new airport featuring a 2.4-kilometre runway.

“Groundbreaking for the new project will take place soon,” the President assured.

The upgrade is expected to improve air connectivity, support tourism, business travel, and emergency services in the middle belt of the country.

Three New Regional Stadia on the Horizon

In a broader infrastructure announcement, President Mahama outlined plans to construct three regional stadia in the near term.

These multipurpose facilities will serve both sporting events and community activities, aligning with the government’s commitment to decentralise modern amenities and infrastructure development beyond the major urban centres.

Focus on Rural and Regional Development

The $500 million World Bank package and the suite of announced projects underscore the administration’s renewed emphasis on:

Enhancing rural connectivity

Supporting agriculture and trade

Reducing urban-rural infrastructure gaps

Promoting balanced regional growth

The announcements come amid the President’s “Resetting Ghana Tour,” which has already featured high-profile launches, including the sod-cutting for a 24-hour economy model market in Dormaa Ahenkro earlier this week.

Stakeholders in the Bono Region welcomed the commitments, viewing them as practical steps toward addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits in farming and regional hubs.

Further details on timelines, specific road projects, and the new airport location are expected in coming weeks.
