Madina GPRTU Drivers Threaten Street Loading Over Market Construction Relocation

The Local Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union at the Madina-Adentan Station, Zachariah Alhasan, has threatened that drivers at the station will resort to loading passengers on the streets if the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly ejects them to make way for the construction of a District Economy Market.
Speaking to Adom News during a demolition exercise by the Assembly to pave the way for the market project, Mr Alhasan said the planned relocation had come as a surprise to the drivers, who had expected to remain at the station.
According to him, the Municipal Chief Executive had previously assured them that they would be allowed to continue operating at the station, making the latest development unexpected.
He explained that the situation had created uncertainty among drivers, many of whom depend on the station as their main point for loading passengers and conducting their daily transport business.
Mr Alhasan further disclosed that the nearest alternative lorry station is privately owned and charges fees that are too expensive for many of the drivers to afford.
He said the high cost of operating from the privately owned station could make it difficult for the drivers to relocate there, leaving them with limited options if they are forced to vacate their current location.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union chairman has therefore appealed to the Assembly to provide an alternative location where the drivers can operate without disrupting their businesses.
He warned that failure to secure a suitable space for them could compel the drivers to load passengers along the streets, a situation that could create traffic congestion and other road-related challenges.
Mr Alhasan urged the Assembly to engage the union and find an amicable solution that would allow the District Economy Market project to proceed without leaving the drivers without a designated place to operate.
The Assembly is undertaking the demolition exercise to make way for the construction of the market, but the drivers are calling for their concerns to be addressed before they are required to leave the station.
