Luis de la Fuente Explains Call-Ups for Eric García and Marc Pubill

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has explained the inclusion of Eric García and Marc Pubill in the national team setup, stressing that both players are already well known within Spain’s football system.

Speaking about Eric García, De la Fuente said the defender had previously worked with him at youth level and during the Olympic Games.

“Eric García was with me in the youth teams and at the Olympics. He is joining this group now and will be just another member of the squad. He hasn’t come before simply because the circumstances weren’t right,” the Spain coach explained.

De la Fuente also praised Marc Pubill, revealing that although the player had not directly featured under him before, Spain’s technical team already had extensive knowledge of his abilities through his work with youth coach Santi Denia.

“Marc Pubill is a very similar case. It is true he hasn’t played under me directly before, but he worked with Santi Denia, so we know him perfectly. We actually have an exceptional scouting report on him,” he stated.

The Spain coach further revealed that the current plan is for Eric García to operate mainly as a central defender, while highlighting the importance of versatile players in modern football.

“The initial plan is for Eric to play in central defense. Eric, like Pubill or Marcos Llorente, is a very versatile player who can play in several positions,” he added.
