Legendary Gospel Musician Yaw Sarpong Passes Away

Ghanaian gospel music icon Yaw Sarpong has reportedly passed away, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned over four decades and left an indelible mark on the nation’s gospel scene.
The sad news emerged on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. According to information gathered by Adomonline.com, the veteran musician died at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
His passing comes barely a month after the death of his longtime backing vocalist and member of the Asomafo music group, Maame Tiwaa (Adwoa Tiwaa), who passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Maame Tiwaa had been actively caring for Yaw Sarpong during his health struggles in his final months.
Yaw Sarpong’s journey into music began in his early years when he joined the Methodist singing group at Asuofua in the Ashanti Region. He was discovered by a medical doctor who helped form a music group in 1971. The group performed in churches and various event centres.
During one such performance at Asuase in Kumasi, a pastor approached him and offered to take him in, an opportunity Yaw Sarpong accepted, living with the pastor and furthering his musical calling.
Over the years, Yaw Sarpong released 27 albums and became one of Ghana’s most beloved gospel artistes. His heartfelt songs of worship, praise, and faith continue to inspire millions. Some of his most celebrated tracks include:
- “Onyame Nhyira”
- “Otuo Safoa”
- “Onyame Nna”
- “Ayeyi”
- “Obiara Nti”
- “Ahobrase3”
- “Meda Wo Ase”
- “Onyame Wɔ Me Mma”
- “Wohaw Ne Sen”
- “Ahobrase3” (collaboration with Sarkodie)
Despite his immense popularity, Yaw Sarpong had previously revealed that his music career had not brought him the financial rewards many assumed, stating that no producer had ever paid him royalties for his 27 albums.
In March 2024, news of his deteriorating health sparked widespread concern among fans and the public. Several prominent Ghanaians, including former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife Samira Bawumia, rallied to support him during that difficult period.
Details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain limited at this time. Tributes are already pouring in from across the country as Ghanaians mourn the loss of one of the nation’s most enduring gospel legends.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
