Learner Driver Kills Mother of Four in Horrific Accident at Assin Fosu

A 40-year-old mother of four, Gladys Mensah, was tragically crushed to death on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, after a learner driver lost control of a Hyundai truck and ploughed into her while she was selling second-hand clothes by the roadside.
The fatal incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. near the SDA School at Habitat, a suburb of Assin Fosu.
Police say the truck, with registration number GR 6146-12, was being used by 26-year-old Benjamin Kwarfo to teach his 34-year-old conductor, Eric Ackon, how to drive. Due to the learner’s inexperience, the vehicle veered off the road, struck Gladys Mensah, dragged her several metres, and eventually crashed into a nearby house, causing significant structural damage.
Eyewitnesses described a gruesome scene: the victim suffered severe head injuries and heavy bleeding. She was rushed to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Both the learner driver (Eric Ackon) and the supervisor (Benjamin Kwarfo) have been arrested and are currently in police custody at Assin Fosu to assist with investigations. The truck has been impounded.
The body of Gladys Mensah has been deposited at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
Residents have expressed outrage and grief over the tragedy, calling on authorities to immediately secure or demolish the partially collapsed building that was hit, citing serious safety risks to pedestrians and children in the area.
The Central North Regional MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, confirmed the arrests and urged drivers, especially those supervising learners, to exercise extreme caution on public roads.
