Lawyer Kpebu Urges NPP to Beg IGP for Abronye DC’s Release, Slams Detention as Unlawful

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has condemned the ongoing detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye DC, calling it an “unlawful” overreach that betrays the principles of justice.

Abronye was arrested on September 8, 2025, for alleged “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace” and remanded for a second week by an Accra Circuit Court on September 12, despite his lawyer’s bail plea.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Sammi Wiafe on September 12, Kpebu urged NPP leaders to directly appeal to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno for Abronye’s release, citing the IGP’s prior role as Deputy IGP under former President Akufo-Addo as a basis for rapport. “This is a small offence; a regional chairman isn’t likely to abscond. If big NPP figures beg the IGP, this case can be withdrawn—he cannot refuse,” Kpebu said.

Kpebu argued the misdemeanour charge does not justify custody, emphasizing Abronye poses no flight risk and bail should be granted pending trial. “We didn’t vote for NDC for this type of governance; I can’t be part of this government if it continues,” he fumed on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, calling for police to return to court Monday for bail or face Human Rights Court action.

The NPP has decried the detention as political harassment, announcing a September 23 demonstration.bae763 Abronye, on hunger strike since remand, is due back in court on September 26.
