Laporta Opens Door to Winter Winger Signing for Flick: “We’re Ready If the Right Profile Emerges”

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that coach Hansi Flick is pushing for a winger reinforcement in the January transfer window, while confirming Eric Garcia’s contract extension and downplaying concerns over financial fair play (FFP) limits.

Speaking at the ‘Foros de Vanguardia’ event on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Laporta outlined the club’s strategic mindset amid a strong La Liga campaign, where Barça sit top with a domestic treble and Champions League semifinal berth under Flick.

Flick’s Winger Wish

Laporta confirmed interest in bolstering the attack:

“Hansi Flick wants a winger for the winter. We need alternatives, but only with the right profile.”

He added that sporting director Deco is actively scouting:

“Possible transfers in winter? Deco is working. Opportunities may arise in the market. If we feel the need to strengthen the squad, we are ready to do it. Everything must be carefully analyzed.”

No specific targets were named, but the club’s youth pipeline – including La Masia talents like Lamine Yamal – provides internal options. Laporta stressed fiscal prudence: “We’re capable of making a significant investment” but only if it fits the squad’s needs.

Eric Garcia Renewal Sealed

In positive news, Laporta announced Eric Garcia’s contract extension until June 2031, with the official signing set for December 11:

“The extension of Eric Garcia’s contract is finalized. We will sign the official agreement on December 11.”

The 24-year-old defender, a versatile key player for Flick, turned down PSG interest to commit long-term. Deco and Flick view him as “exceptional” and a cornerstone of the backline.

FFP 1:1 Rule: “Not Too Worried”

Addressing UEFA’s 1:1 spending rule (revenue must match outlays), Laporta explained a slight exceedance due to youth extensions:

“The 1:1 rule regarding financial fair play? It’s not a static picture. In January, we reached the 1:1 ratio and decided that we needed to extend the contracts of Lamine, Cubarsí, Balde, Gavi, and Fermín. All of this caused us to slightly exceed that limit. We signed contracts with Joan García and Roony.”

He remains optimistic:

“We have a competitive team and I believe we will manage to organize everything in a way that makes it even more competitive. The market value of the team is currently much higher. La Masia is pushing from below. There are many ways to continue adding new elements.”

Flick’s Impact Praised

Laporta lauded the German coach’s influence:

“Flick is getting the most out of our players… He’s a man with clear ideas and he’s enjoying himself. He’s very demanding.”

This comes after a morale-boosting win over Atlético Madrid, with Frenkie de Jong and Fermín López returning to training ahead of the Betis clash.

As January looms, Barça fans eye potential signings while celebrating defensive stability with Garcia’s renewal. The club’s blend of youth and savvy management positions them for another strong season.
