A lactating mother and her infant child have reportedly died after falling from a collapsed bridge at Bugri in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.
The woman, believed to be in her mid-twenties, was reportedly riding a motorbike while attempting to cross the badly damaged bridge to her village when she fell into the collapsed section.
The tragic incident has renewed concerns among residents over the deteriorating condition of the bridge, which they say has become a serious danger to commuters.
According to residents, the latest incident brings to three the number of people who have reportedly lost their lives at the bridge.
A young man is also said to have died at the same location earlier this month.
Residents say the bridge serves as an important link between Bugri and neighbouring communities, with many people, particularly motorcyclists, depending on it for their daily movement.
They fear that the continued use of the damaged bridge could result in further deaths if urgent action is not taken.
The bereaved family and residents have therefore appealed to the government and relevant authorities to urgently reconstruct the bridge.
They are calling for immediate intervention to make the route safe for commuters and prevent further loss of lives.
Residents stressed that the reconstruction of the bridge should be treated as an emergency, warning that another tragedy could occur if the situation is allowed to persist.
