Koforidua High Court Convicts Woman of Manslaughter for Acid Attack on Boyfriend

The Koforidua High Court has convicted 25-year-old Vera Asare of manslaughter after she pleaded guilty to pouring acid on her boyfriend, Daniel Omane, while he slept.
The fatal incident took place on November 29, 2024, at their residence following a domestic dispute between the couple. Asare admitted to the act, which caused severe chemical burns to the victim’s body.
Mr. Omane suffered extensive injuries and endured months of medical treatment before eventually succumbing to complications on July 25, 2025.
During court proceedings, Vera Asare entered a guilty plea under a negotiated plea agreement between the prosecution and defence. The agreement recommended a 10-year custodial sentence.
However, Justice presiding over the matter deferred sentencing to March 11, 2026, to allow for a pregnancy test on the accused and consideration of other relevant factors, including mitigation and victim impact statements.
The court’s decision to convict on the lesser charge of manslaughter rather than murder reflects the guilty plea and the negotiated position presented by both sides.
The case has once again drawn public attention to the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating consequences of acid attacks, which remain a serious concern in parts of the country despite ongoing awareness campaigns and stricter penalties.
Legal experts note that sentencing in manslaughter cases can vary widely depending on the circumstances, the degree of intent, remorse shown, and personal factors such as pregnancy or first-time offender status.
The court is expected to deliver its sentence on March 11, taking all evidence and submissions into account. The family of the deceased has expressed hope for justice that reflects the gravity of the loss they have suffered.
