Kibi Carpenter Arrested for Gruesome Murder of Security Guard at Presbyterian College

A 37-year-old carpenter, Kwame Arhin, alias Abompe, is in police custody after allegedly slashing the throat of a security guard during a violent altercation at the Kibi Presbyterian College of Education.

The brutal killing, which occurred on Saturday, November 15, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the quiet mining town, with authorities swiftly apprehending the suspect the following day.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, November 16, 2025, revealing that officers received a distress call reporting a murder at Kibi Newtown, near the Kibi Court Complex. A rapid-response team, including the Crime Scene Management Unit, was dispatched to secure the area.

Upon arrival, investigators found the body of Jonas Baah Sarpong, a dedicated night watchman at the college, lying in a pool of blood with a deep laceration to his throat. The scene was meticulously processed, and the body was first conveyed to Kibi Government Hospital morgue before being transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra for preservation and a full autopsy.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fatal confrontation stemmed from a disagreement between Sarpong and Arhin. According to police, the suspect allegedly used a cutlass to inflict the lethal wound before fleeing into nearby bushes. Acting on intelligence, officers tracked Arhin to a hideout close to the college, where he was arrested without resistance.

“The suspect is currently in custody and is being processed for court,” the statement read, signed by DSP David Fianko-Okyere, Public Affairs Officer for the Eastern South Regional Police Command.

Colleagues described Sarpong, a father of three in his late 40s, as a diligent and well-respected employee who had served the college for over a decade. “He was always the first to arrive and the last to leave,” one coworker mourned. “No one understands what could have triggered such violence.”

The motive remains under investigation, though sources suggest a possible dispute over personal or work-related matters. The cutlass believed to be the murder weapon has been recovered and logged as evidence.

Arhin is expected to face charges of murder under Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction. He is scheduled for an initial court appearance in the coming days as forensic analysis and witness statements are compiled.

The incident has heightened security concerns around educational institutions in Kibi, with the college administration pledging to review night patrol protocols and install additional surveillance systems.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has urged calm and assured the public of a thorough, impartial investigation. “Justice will be served,” DSP Fianko-Okyere affirmed.

As the community mourns Sarpong’s senseless death, his family has appealed for support with funeral arrangements. A date for the burial will be announced following the completion of the autopsy.
