Ken Agyapong Urges Afenyo-Markin to Step Down as Minority Leader, Cites Internal Power Struggles

New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has publicly called on Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to vacate his position, citing growing internal competition and tensions within the party.

According to Mr Agyapong, several Members of Parliament are allegedly positioning themselves to take over the Minority Leader role currently held by the Effutu MP. He believes it would be in the party’s best interest for Mr Afenyo-Markin to step aside and allow others the opportunity to serve.

Speaking in an interview on UTV on December 15, Mr Agyapong argued that Afenyo-Markin’s personal financial standing makes it unnecessary for him to cling to the leadership role.

“He is well-to-do, so he should leave the position for those who are fighting him,” he said.

Mr Agyapong suggested that much of the criticism surrounding the Minority Leader’s leadership is driven less by performance issues and more by internal power struggles within the party.

He further revealed that some party members are pushing for the Minority Leader position to be occupied by an MP from the Eastern or Ashanti Regions, rather than the Central Region.

“Those criticising Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s leadership want positions. I have personally called him to tell him to step aside,” he stated.

Although he claimed to know individuals actively lobbying for the role, Mr Agyapong said he has chosen not to mention their names publicly.

“If it were in the olden days, I would have mentioned all those seeking his position’s names, but now I won’t. He can eat for the rest of his life, and it shouldn’t look like being an MP is the only way to survive,” he added.

Mr Agyapong’s remarks have intensified debate within the NPP about leadership succession in Parliament, particularly as the party navigates internal restructuring and prepares for future elections.
