Journalist Samuel Addo Files Police Report After Alleged Assault by Fire Service Personnel at Kasoa

Class Media journalist Samuel Addo has formally lodged a complaint with police following an alleged assault by Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel while he was covering a fire outbreak at Kasoa New Market.

Addo claims the incident resulted in the theft of GH¢10,200 from his possession, though his seized mobile phone was later returned through the intervention of local MP Phyllis Naa Koryor Okoh.

In an interview with Citi News, Addo recounted arriving at the scene during a morning broadcast and later visiting the fire station to seek the GNFS side of the story. There, he witnessed officers allegedly assaulting civilians and began filming.

“A young fire officer approached me; I identified myself as media, and he left. Minutes later, about 10 officers, including him, confronted me. They grabbed my neck, twisted my arms behind my back, and beat me,” Addo said.

He alleged they confiscated his phone, tore his belt, and rifled through his bag, discovering GH¢10,200 missing from the GH¢20,000 he carried.

Addo has obtained a medical form for treatment and confirmed reporting the theft and assault to police.

The episode revives longstanding concerns over journalist safety during emergency coverage and accountability for security forces’ conduct toward media and civilians. GNFS has not issued an official response, as investigations proceed.
