Japan Stun Netherlands with Dramatic Late Equaliser in 2-2 Draw

Japan produced a stunning late comeback to deny the Netherlands victory as the two sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their highly anticipated “Group of Death” clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Dutch broke the deadlock when captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to power home a header from Ryan Gravenberch’s delivery, giving Oranje the advantage after a tightly contested opening period.

Japan responded through Keito Nakamura, whose equaliser brought the Asian side back into the contest and set up a frenetic second half.

Crysencio Summerville then restored the Netherlands’ lead, finishing off a swift attacking move to put Ronald Koeman’s men back in control. The Dutch appeared on course for all three points as they absorbed sustained Japanese pressure in the closing stages.

However, Japan had the final say. Deep into stoppage time, Koki Ogawa’s corner caused problems in the Dutch penalty area, and Daichi Kamada met the delivery with a deft glancing header that found the far corner of the net.

The dramatic equaliser sparked jubilant celebrations among the Japanese supporters and ensured the spoils were shared after a captivating encounter that lived up to its billing as one of the toughest fixtures in the group.
