The Minister for Local Government, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that the evacuation of accumulated waste from the Jamestown area to the Adepa Waste Management Centre in Nsawam will begin next week.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, September 10, the former Majority Leader said preparations were already underway to ensure the exercise begins within the government’s one-week deadline.
He explained that regional coordinators had been brought to Accra to mobilise and coordinate the deployment of trucks from various parts of the country.
According to Mr Ayariga, the mobilisation is intended to ensure that enough trucks are available to clear the accumulated waste from the Jamestown site.
President Mahama Expected to Launch Exercise
Mr Ayariga said he had briefed President John Dramani Mahama on the arrangements and expects the President to officially launch the exercise once the trucks are ready.
“By next week, I am very confident that the evacuation of the waste from the Jamestown site will start,” he said.
He added:
“I’ve told the President, I mentioned to him at Cabinet yesterday, that I’m trying to get them on site so that by next week he comes to commission the exercise.”
The planned evacuation forms part of government efforts to address the growing accumulation of waste at Jamestown, where the situation has raised concerns over sanitation and public health.
The mobilisation of trucks from across the country is expected to facilitate the removal and transportation of the accumulated waste to the Adepa Waste Management Centre in Nsawam.
