“If Dr. Bawumia is an Outsider, What About You and Me?” – NPP Communications Officer Urges Post-2000 Members to Rally Behind Bawumia

In a fiery rebuttal to claims of entitlement within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sunyani East Constituency Communications Officer, Abubakari Yakubu (Baba Amando), has called on all party members who joined after 2000 to unite firmly behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their “Chief Alien.”

In a viral Facebook post, Baba Amando lambasted flagbearer aspirants who dismiss Dr. Bawumia as an “outsider” or “alien” simply because he joined the NPP after the party’s founding era. “It is unfortunate that some flagbearer aspirants feel entitled to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the expense of others, simply because they joined the party before Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he wrote.

He argued that such rhetoric categorizes post-2000 members as “aliens” and “slaves,” unfit to lead despite their contributions. Dr. Bawumia, who joined in 2002 and rose to become Vice President on the NPP ticket, exemplifies this injustice, according to the post.

“Consequently, we must adhere to and support our Chief Alien, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia,” Baba Amando declared, imploring newer members: “Any delegate from the 2000s should recognize that voting for Dr. Bawumia is a vote for themselves. Conversely, voting against Dr. Bawumia constitutes a vote against oneself.”

The statement comes amid intensifying jockeying for the NPP’s 2024 presidential flagbearership, where Dr. Bawumia faces off against veteran contenders like Kennedy Agyapong and Alan Kyerematen. Critics have questioned Bawumia’s “roots” in the Danquah-Busia tradition, prompting sharp responses from his supporters.

Baba Amando envisioned a party takeover by this “new generation of leaders who engage in leadership contests based on innovative ideas rather than entitlement.” He praised Dr. Bawumia as “compassionate, dedicated, respectful, modest, and visionary,” urging delegates to vote accordingly to “reconstruct [the party] to accommodate a larger alien population.”

The post has sparked widespread debate online, with NPP youth wings echoing calls for inclusivity. Party insiders say it reflects growing frustration among younger members who feel sidelined by the old guard.

As the NPP primaries approach, Baba Amando’s message underscores a generational rift: Will the party embrace fresh blood, or cling to historical entitlements?
