GTEC Directs Public Universities to Follow Due Process on Fee Reviews

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has cautioned publicly funded universities against reviewing student fees without following the required legal procedures, including obtaining Parliamentary approval.

According to GTEC, any adjustment to fees by public universities must strictly comply with existing laws, stressing that unilateral fee increments are not permitted.

As part of corrective measures, GTEC has directed the affected university to credit all continuing students who paid amounts above the approved fees for the last academic year. The excess payments are to be applied to students’ fees for the next academic year.

The directive is aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability, and fairness in fee administration across public tertiary institutions.
