GRIDCo Restores Power After Major Fault on Akosombo–Volta Transmission Line

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has begun restoring electricity to affected areas following a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line that disrupted power supply to parts of the country early Thursday.

According to a press statement issued on August 20, 2026, the national power system experienced the fault at approximately 4:30 a.m.

The fault triggered the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants as part of the system’s protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System. This resulted in the loss of power supply to some parts of the country.

GRIDCo said its engineers, working in close coordination with other power sector agencies, immediately isolated the affected transmission line and commenced the safe and systematic restoration of the power system.

Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, with restoration efforts progressing steadily to ensure that supply is returned to all remaining customers as quickly and safely as possible.

The company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and assured the public that all relevant technical teams have been fully mobilised and are working with urgency to achieve complete restoration.

GRIDCo said it would continue to provide updates as further information becomes available and appealed for the patience, understanding and cooperation of the public as restoration efforts continue.
