Government Slashes Passport Fees from GH¢500 to GH¢350, Says Foreign Affairs Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced a significant reduction in ordinary passport fees from GH¢500 to GH¢350, as part of Amended Fees and Charges presented to Parliament on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

The move, shared via a post on X, reflects the Mahama administration’s commitment to making passports more affordable for Ghanaians while maintaining high security standards.

In his statement, Ablakwa noted, “The amended Fees and Charges duly capture the Ordinary Passport Fees reduction from GHS500.00 to GHS350.00.

Thankfully, Ghanaians gave the NDC the emphatic numbers in Parliament to ensure this is approved in the coming days.” He highlighted the government’s response to public concerns about affordability, emphasizing reforms that have enhanced the efficiency, professionalism, and speed of passport delivery through courier services.

The fee reduction follows the introduction of chip-embedded biometric passports in 2024, which had raised costs but improved security. The Ministry’s reforms also include plans to establish additional passport application centers in underserved regions like Oti and Savannah, addressing accessibility issues raised by citizens on X, such as @GhanaWeb’s call for broader reforms. The proposal is expected to be approved swiftly, given the National Democratic Congress’s parliamentary majority, ensuring Ghanaians benefit from more affordable and efficient passport services.
