Government Imposes 2 PM to 6 AM Curfew in Bawku and Nalerigu Amid Escalating Conflict

The Government of Ghana has introduced a curfew from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily in Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding communities, effective Sunday, July 27, 2025, until further notice, to address a surge in violent incidents linked to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

The Ministry of the Interior, on the advice of the Upper East and North East Regional Security Councils, issued the directive via Executive Instrument, as announced by Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.

The curfew aims to restore peace and facilitate the safe evacuation of students from schools in conflict zones, including Nalerigu Senior High School, where two students were fatally shot by unidentified gunmen on July 26, 2025. A statement from Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that the measure protects students targeted in the unrest, with the Ghana Armed Forces deployed to enforce peace and maintain order.

The government has also imposed a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons in these areas, with violators facing arrest and prosecution. Chiefs, elders, and community leaders are urged to promote non-violent solutions to restore stability. The escalation, marked by recent killings, including that of the Kusasi Chief in Asawase, has prompted a shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement, with heightened military presence to safeguard lives and property.
