Government Confirms Chiefs Receive First-Quarter Allowances for 2025

The Government of Ghana has successfully disbursed the first-quarter allowances for traditional leaders across the country, reinforcing its commitment to supporting chieftaincy institutions.
The announcement was made by Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development in charge of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, during the launch of the 2025 Ghana Chieftaincy Awards in Accra on Thursday, July 17.
“I would say that, as a ministry and through the leadership of the President, the government has ensured that the first-quarter allowances for traditional leaders have been duly disbursed,” Sowah stated, adding that second-quarter payments are expected to follow soon. The timely disbursement underscores the Mahama administration’s dedication to empowering chiefs, who play a pivotal role in cultural preservation, peacebuilding, and grassroots development.
The Ghana Chieftaincy Awards, launched at the event, aim to honor traditional rulers for their exemplary leadership and contributions to national development. Sowah urged Ghanaians to value their cultural heritage, noting, “These awards must ignite a deeper national conversation: How do we harness the moral authority, cultural wisdom, and strategic position of our traditional leaders to shape a better Ghana?
The confirmation of the allowances, part of the government’s “Resetting Ghana Agenda,” has been widely welcomed, with posts on X echoing the announcement and praising the government’s efforts to support traditional institutions.
