GNFS HEROES RUSH TO SCENE: 3 DEAD, 6 INJURED IN HORRIFIC KPANDO–AZIAVE HEAD-ON CRASH

A devastating head-on collision between a Howo Tipper Truck (registration GN-4585-25) and a Daewoo Matiz taxi (registration GW-5674-19) on Tuesday, December 3, 2025, claimed three lives, injured six others, and left one person miraculously unharmed, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.

The tragic incident occurred along the Kpando–Aziave stretch, a known accident-prone route in the Volta Region.

Casualty Breakdown:

3 dead (all from the Daewoo Matiz – the driver and two passengers)

6 injured (5 from the Matiz, including trapped victims; 1 from the Tipper Truck – the driver)

1 unharmed (the Tipper Truck mate)

Eyewitnesses told GNFS responders that the Daewoo Matiz veered into the opposite lane, colliding directly with the oncoming Tipper Truck.

Swift GNFS Response

A rapid-response team from the Kpando Fire Station, supported by the Ghana Police Service, arrived promptly at the scene. Firefighters executed a complex extrication operation, freeing three trapped occupants from the mangled Matiz using hydraulic rescue tools.

The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities, while the deceased were conveyed to the morgue. Traffic, which had ground to a halt, was fully restored after debris clearance.

“Our team acted with speed and precision to save lives and secure the scene,” said the GNFS Volta Regional PRO. “This tragedy is a stark reminder of the need for road discipline and vehicle maintenance.”

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the lane deviation. Preliminary reports suggest possible speeding or mechanical failure in the Matiz.

The GNFS has renewed calls for drivers to avoid reckless overtaking, ensure regular vehicle checks, and adhere to speed limits – especially on rural highways.
