Ghana’s Parliament Ranked Second Most Open in Africa — Ayariga

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has described Ghana’s Parliament as one of the most transparent legislatures on the African continent, revealing that it currently ranks second in Africa for openness and public accessibility.
Speaking during a Leadership Media Briefing on Friday, May 22, 2026, as Parliament resumed sitting, Mr. Ayariga said the country’s legislature has made significant strides in promoting transparency through reforms aimed at improving public participation and access to parliamentary proceedings.
“In Africa, we are one of the most open parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. I believe that our aspiration is that we become number one in Africa,” he stated.
According to him, Ghana’s unicameral parliamentary system, together with recent transparency reforms, has contributed greatly to the country’s strong performance in continental rankings.
“There is an issue whether we should be put in the category of those who practise the bicameral parliament. We have a unicameral Parliament. But they have number one, and we followed,” he explained.
Mr. Ayariga further noted that the introduction of live television broadcasting of parliamentary proceedings has enhanced openness and accountability, giving citizens greater insight into legislative activities and national debates.
“Now that we have live television broadcasting of our proceedings, in the next rating they might probably review that and Ghana may climb to the top as a parliament,” he added.
The comments come amid ongoing efforts by Parliament to deepen public engagement through digital platforms, expanded media access, and increased transparency in legislative processes.
