Ghana’s Creative Industry Can Help Reduce Unemployment — KOKA

Ghanaian entertainment critic says ’s creative arts industry has the potential to significantly reduce unemployment if it receives the right investment, policies and support.

Speaking on ’s Good Afternoon Ghana programme, KOKA noted that many young people are increasingly turning to entertainment, fashion, dance and digital content creation as career paths.

“The creative arts, tourism, culture is the way to go because that is what every kid wants to do,” he stated.

According to him, government cannot absorb every young person into public sector employment, making it necessary to create opportunities within the creative economy.

“It is not everybody that a government can employ. So you need to widen and open the space,” he said.

KOKA called for the development of more event centres, sporting facilities and creative spaces where young talents can grow sustainable businesses and careers.

He explained that expanding the entertainment ecosystem would create opportunities for dancers, fashion designers, makeup artists, event organisers, musicians and digital creators.

“Look at dance. Dance is everywhere. Look at fashion. All of them are all over,” he added.

The entertainment critic also urged government to introduce startup support systems and incentives to help young creatives develop their talents into profitable ventures.

He further advocated for more regional cultural and entertainment events across the country to decentralise opportunities and reduce pressure on cities like .

“If every region has events, you wouldn’t have pressure on government about unemployment,” he argued.

KOKA additionally proposed structured talent development programmes similar to sports systems, including district-level competitions and digital talent platforms to discover and promote young creatives nationwide.

According to him, if properly developed, Ghana’s creative industry could become one of the country’s largest economic sectors while creating thousands of jobs for the youth.
