Ghana Presidential Candidates Sign Peace Pact Ahead of December 7 Elections
As Ghana gears up for its December 7 general elections, all presidential candidates have reaffirmed their commitment to peace by signing a historic peace pact. The ceremony, held on November 28, 2024, at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, sought to promote unity and ensure stability before, during, and after the elections.
The peace pact obligates candidates to campaign responsibly, foster national cohesion, and accept the election results peacefully. The event was graced by prominent dignitaries, including Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa, National Peace Council Chairman Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, and National Chief Imam Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu.
Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi urged all Ghanaians to support efforts for free, fair, and transparent elections. He emphasized that the peace pact should not remain a symbolic gesture and called on candidates to honor their promises, particularly after the results are declared.
Jean Mensa, EC Chairperson, hailed the event as a critical milestone in Ghana’s democratic journey. She commended the candidates for prioritizing peace and national unity over personal ambitions, highlighting their shared responsibility to uphold democracy.
Presidential candidates present included Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (NPP), John Mahama (NDC), Daniel Augustus Lartey (GCPP), Christian Kwabena Andrews (GUM), Kofi Akpaloo (LPG), Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Kumankuma (CPP), Hassan Abdulai Ayariga (APC), Mohammed Frimpong (NDP), and independent contenders Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Nana Kwame Bediako, Kofi Koranteng, and George Twum-Barima-Adu.
As the election date approaches, the peace pact serves as a powerful reminder of Ghana’s dedication to maintaining peace, stability, and democratic integrity.
