Ghana High Commission urges caution amid planned protests in South Africa

The Ghana High Commission Pretoria has issued a safety advisory to Ghanaians living in South Africa, urging heightened caution ahead of planned demonstrations over immigration concerns.

The warning follows circulating reports and viral videos of xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in parts of the country.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 28, the mission—speaking on behalf of High Commissioner Benjamin Anani Quashie—advised citizens, particularly those in Pretoria, to prioritise their safety as tensions rise.

“I urge everyone to continue exercising heightened vigilance and to place the highest priority on personal safety during this period,” the statement said.

The advisory comes as a group identified as the March Organisation prepares to stage a protest march to the Presidency to present grievances related to immigration and employment.

The High Commission specifically urged Ghanaian shop owners to temporarily shut down their businesses and avoid protest zones.

“Shop owners are strongly encouraged to close their businesses for the day and avoid areas where protests or demonstrations are taking place,” the statement noted.

Ghanaians were also cautioned against participating in any gatherings that could escalate into confrontations, as well as maintaining a low profile both physically and online.

“Please refrain from participating in public gatherings that could escalate into confrontation,” the mission added, warning against sharing provocative or inflammatory content on social media.

The High Commission assured that it is closely monitoring developments and will provide further updates as the situation evolves, as concerns grow over the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa.
