Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) Disqualified from 2024 Presidential Election Over Nomination Issues
On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) was officially disqualified from participating in the upcoming presidential election. Mrs. Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), made this announcement during an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
Mrs. Mensa explained that the GFP’s new vice-presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi—who had been nominated to replace the late Akua Donkor—did not meet the necessary qualifications for nomination. The EC identified irregularities in Kubi’s nomination forms, particularly the failure to secure endorsements from two registered voters in each district, as required by election laws.
As a result of the disqualification, the printing of the presidential ballot papers will proceed as scheduled, without any changes to the candidate positions. Akua Donkor’s image and party symbol will remain in the third spot on the ballot paper, as originally assigned before her untimely death. Any votes cast for Donkor will be annulled, as confirmed by Mrs. Mensa.
Philip Appiah Kubi, a well-known broadcaster with Peace FM, was selected by the GFP to take over the presidential ticket after the sudden death of the party’s original candidate, Akua Donkor, on October 28, 2024. Following her passing, the EC temporarily halted the printing of ballot papers and gave the GFP until November 8, 2024, to nominate a replacement. However, due to the issues with Kubi’s nomination forms, the party’s participation in the 2024 election has now been officially blocked.
The EC will now resume the printing of ballot papers, with no further changes to the presidential lineup.
