Ghana Armed Forces Launches Probe into Soldiers’ Clash with JoyNews Journalist at Spintex

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has initiated an investigation into the alleged misconduct of its personnel during a confrontation with JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony and a civilian at a warehouse demolition site on Spintex Road, Accra, on July 30, 2025.
The incident, which involved soldiers obstructing Carlony’s live coverage, confiscating his phone, detaining him briefly, and assaulting a civilian interviewee, has sparked widespread concerns about press freedom and military conduct.
In a statement issued late on July 30, 2025, the GAF, acting on a directive from the Presidency, confirmed it is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. “The Ghana Armed Forces has commenced investigations to establish the facts and ensure accountability,” the statement read, promising a thorough probe. The demolition, reportedly linked to a land dispute between the Ghana Airports Company and McDan Group, saw military and National Security operatives overseeing the operation, which turned chaotic when Carlony was targeted.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) condemned the incident, citing it as part of a pattern of attacks on journalists, including previous cases involving JoyNews staff. Posts on X, such as from @Joy997FM, amplified calls for accountability, with users like @GHOneTV questioning the military’s role in civilian operations. Former Tema East MP Titus Glover suggested the demolition may stem from a personal feud, adding to public speculation.
The GAF has urged calm as the investigation proceeds, with findings expected to be made public. The incident has intensified scrutiny on security forces’ engagement with civilians and journalists, prompting demands for reforms to protect press freedom in Ghana.
