Ghana Armed Forces Launch Probe into Alleged Assault on Journalist in Walewale

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has initiated a formal investigation into an alleged assault on a journalist by military personnel at Walewale in the North East Region.
The incident, reported on Monday, January 26, 2026, reportedly occurred on the outskirts of Walewale an area that has recently witnessed heightened insecurity due to repeated attacks on public transport vehicles, resulting in deaths and injuries.
According to reports, soldiers travelling in an armoured vehicle and a military truck from Bolgatanga to Tamale allegedly stopped in Walewale and assaulted the North East Regional Correspondent of Media General, along with other civilians, without provocation.
The military personnel are also accused of damaging property at the scene, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles, creating widespread fear and apprehension among local residents.
Available information indicates that the journalist was detained for more than four hours, and images on his mobile phone documenting his injuries were reportedly deleted.
In an official statement, the Ghana Armed Forces acknowledged the reported incident and assured the public that investigations have commenced to establish the full facts surrounding the matter.
GAF also cautioned that the prevailing security situation in the North East and Upper East Regions has necessitated intensified military operations, some of which may be conducted without prior notice to the public.
The Armed Forces urged residents to cooperate with security agencies to help maintain peace and stability in the area, noting that the outcome of the investigation will determine any further disciplinary or legal action.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and other media bodies have condemned the alleged assault, calling for swift and transparent investigations while demanding full accountability and protection for journalists performing their duties.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the conduct of security personnel during operations in volatile areas and the need for clear guidelines to prevent abuse and ensure respect for press freedom.
