The Ghana Air Force has taken over security responsibilities at the Presidency from the Ghana Navy following the 49th Ceremonial Changing of the Guard Parade held on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The ceremony, presided over by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, marked the formal transfer of guard duties from the Ghana Navy to the Ghana Air Force for the next three months.
The Changing of the Guard is a longstanding military tradition at the Presidency, under which security responsibility at the seat of government rotates every three months among the three services of the Ghana Armed Forces—the Ghana Army, Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force.
Navy hands over to Air Force
The latest ceremony brought the Ghana Navy’s three-month period of responsibility to an end and formally ushered in the Ghana Air Force as the new guard responsible for security at the Presidency.
The event was attended by government officials, members of the security services and schoolchildren who gathered to witness the formal military ceremony and its accompanying displays.
Among those present were the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia; Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka; Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno; and Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.
Ceremony showcases military precision
The parade featured disciplined drills, military band performances and colourful ceremonial displays, highlighting the professionalism and traditions of Ghana’s Armed Forces.
As part of the proceedings, personnel from the outgoing Ghana Navy contingent and the incoming Ghana Air Force contingent took part in coordinated drills to demonstrate the precision, discipline and teamwork required in the execution of their duties.
The military band also provided musical accompaniment throughout the ceremony, adding colour and pageantry to the formal transfer.
Continuity in presidential security
Beyond its ceremonial significance, the Changing of the Guard serves a practical purpose by ensuring continuity in security arrangements at the Presidency.
Personnel assigned to the guard are expected to maintain a high level of discipline, vigilance and professionalism throughout their three-month period of responsibility.
Following the completion of the handover ceremony, the Ghana Air Force guard was formally installed as the new service responsible for security at the Presidency.
