GFA Arranges High-Profile Friendlies for Black Stars Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is actively working to secure a series of top-tier international friendly matches as part of the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Austria for a potential friendly game, which would follow Ghana’s confirmed clash against Germany in March 2026.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Asante Twum said: “Austria is one of the teams we are talking to play after the Germany friendly game, and once the contract is signed, we will make it official to the public.”

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Germany in Stuttgart on March 30, 2026, in what will serve as a major test for Otto Addo’s squad as they build momentum toward the summer tournament.

Ghana will make their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance in 2026, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The expanded 48-team format offers fresh opportunities, and the Black Stars are determined to make a stronger showing after their disappointing group-stage exit in Qatar 2022.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia.

Their campaign opens on June 17 against Panama in Toronto, followed by a highly anticipated clash with England in Boston and a final group-stage match against Croatia in Philadelphia.

Asante Twum stressed the importance of these friendlies in squad preparation: “These games are critical for our squad to gain cohesion and sharpen their competitive edge.”

The GFA continues to engage potential opponents for additional matches in the lead-up to the tournament, with Austria emerging as a strong candidate for the post-Germany fixture.
