GES: Obuasi SHTS Headmaster Not Cleared in Sexual Abuse Allegations

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed reports suggesting that the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Abdulai Zakaria, has been cleared of allegations of sexual abuse involving female students.
The Service says investigations into the matter are still ongoing, with its Disciplinary Committee yet to complete its work and submit its final report.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Friday, November 6, GES Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi stressed that no individual implicated in the matter had been exonerated.
“The headmaster has not been cleared. In fact, just as you mentioned, the committee is yet to finalise its work,” he stated.
Mr Fenyi was responding to questions about the progress of investigations following reports that the committee had completed its work and cleared the headmaster.
He explained that although the committee was initially expected to submit its findings on Wednesday, it requested additional time to engage all the students allegedly affected by the incidents.
According to him, the committee considers the accounts of the students essential to producing a comprehensive report that accurately reflects their experiences.
He disclosed that some students scheduled to meet the committee failed to honour their appointments, while others required alternative arrangements to participate in the process.
Following the request, GES management granted the committee an additional seven working days to complete its engagements and gather the necessary information.
Mr Fenyi said management considered the extension necessary to ensure that every affected student had an opportunity to share their account.
He assured the public that the investigation remained active and that the committee was expected to complete its work within the extended period.
The GES spokesperson also revealed that the committee had visited the Obuasi SHTS campus to interact with students and gather further information to support its investigations.
The clarification comes amid public concern and calls for accountability over the allegations involving the school’s headmaster.
