GES Announces Two-Day Midterm Break for Basic Schools Nationwide – March 9–10, 2026

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has declared a two-day midterm break for all basic schools across the country, scheduled for Monday, March 9, and Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

In an official circular issued to all Regional Directors of Education, the Service confirmed that the break applies to Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools nationwide.

“The approved Midterm Break for all Basic Schools (Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools) will take place on 9th and 10th March, 2026,” the circular stated, signed by Munawaru Issahaque (PhD), Acting Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Assurance.

GES directed that all pupils must resume classes immediately after the break to continue academic activities without delay.

“All learners are expected to return to school on Wednesday, 11th March, 2026 to continue their studies,” the statement added.

Regional Directors have been tasked with ensuring the information reaches every Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Director of Education, who in turn must inform Heads of Basic Schools, teachers, parents, and learners well in advance.

The Management of GES expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their continued cooperation in maintaining smooth academic calendars and implementing such directives effectively.

Parents, guardians, teachers, and school administrators are advised to make necessary arrangements ahead of the short break — including travel plans, supervision during the two days off, and prompt return to school on March 11 — to avoid any disruption to the academic term.

The midterm break provides a brief rest period for learners and staff midway through the term, allowing time for family engagement and minor rest before the second half of the academic year intensifies.

Schools are reminded to use the circular as official guidance and communicate clearly with their communities to ensure full compliance.
