ermany have confirmed the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach of the men’s national team, ushering in a new era following the country’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.
The 59-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the German Football Association (DFB) and will officially take charge on August 15, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s shock Round of 32 exit to Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Klopp’s first assignment will be to lead the four-time world champions into the UEFA Nations League before preparing for UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Klopp returns to the dugout after leaving his role as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer, ending speculation over his next managerial destination. Widely regarded as one of the most influential coaches of his generation, he previously enjoyed successful spells with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, winning the Bundesliga twice with Dortmund before ending Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title and also lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy.
Speaking after signing his contract at the DFB Campus in Frankfurt, Klopp expressed his pride at taking charge of his country.
“Few things can bring us Germans together like the national team. It is a great honour to become Germany’s head coach, and I want to help build a team that the country can be proud of,” Klopp said.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf described Klopp as the federation’s first choice from the outset of the recruitment process.
“Jurgen was our desired solution from the very beginning. He is full of energy and has a real passion for this task,” Neuendorf said.
Klopp will be joined by familiar faces on his coaching staff, with long-time assistants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders joining him alongside former Germany international Sven Bender. Former World Cup-winning defender Per Mertesacker has also been appointed managing director for sport and will take up his role in 2027.
The appointment comes as Germany seek to restore their place among world football’s elite after another disappointing World Cup campaign. Since lifting the World Cup in 2014, the Germans have struggled for consistency on the global stage, making Klopp’s arrival one of the most significant appointments in the national team’s recent history.
