Gbese District Court to Rule on March 25 in Extradition Case of “Abu Trica”

The Gbese District Court has fixed Wednesday, March 25, 2026, to deliver its ruling on a preliminary legal objection filed in the high-profile extradition case involving Frederick Kumi, popularly known as “Abu Trica.”

The case stems from a formal request by the United States government seeking Abu Trica’s extradition to face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Abu Trica’s legal team, led by prominent human rights lawyer Oliver Barker Vormawor, has challenged the legal foundation of the extradition proceedings. They argue that the offences listed in the US request — wire fraud and money laundering — are not expressly covered under the 1931 Extradition Treaty between Ghana and the United States.

Counsel further contended that the inclusion of “conspiracy” is restricted to specific categories that do not apply in this instance. The defence insists that Ghana cannot use more recent domestic legislation to broaden the scope of the 1931 treaty, stressing that extradition must strictly adhere to the offences mutually agreed upon by both nations at the time of the treaty.

A group of youth from Swedru on Monday besieged the court premises, demanding the immediate release of Abu Trica and expressing strong local support for him.

The court’s decision on the preliminary objection is expected to be pivotal. If the objection is upheld, the extradition proceedings could be terminated or significantly delayed. If overruled, the case will proceed to the substantive hearing on the merits of the extradition request.

The ruling on March 25 will be closely watched by legal experts, human rights groups, and the public, as it could set an important precedent on how Ghana interprets its extradition obligations under colonial-era treaties in modern criminal cases.

Further updates will be provided after the court delivers its judgment.
