GBC Appeals to Government Over GH¢13.6 Million Legacy Electricity Debt

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has urged the government to settle its outstanding GH¢13.6 million electricity debt, inherited from shared infrastructure with other state agencies.

Director-General Prof. Amin Alhassan raised the issue during President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to GBC on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

He explained the debt originated years ago when institutions like the military, police, and national security shared unmetered power from GBC’s facilities. After individual metering, agencies disconnected, leaving accumulated arrears billed solely to GBC.

“We have paid GH¢5 million this year, but the balance remains a heavy burden,” Prof. Alhassan said, describing it as a “legacy debt” not generated by GBC alone that causes “sleepless nights.”

He appealed for governmental intervention to relieve the public broadcaster, ensuring uninterrupted operations and service delivery.

The plea underscores financial pressures on state media amid broader utility challenges for public institutions. No immediate government response has been announced.
