Freemasons Join Asantehene in Mourning at Asantehemaa’s Doteyie Rites

On September 16, 2025, the Grand Lodge of Ghana and the District Grand Lodge of England, led by Most Worshipful Dr. Nortey Kwashie Omaboe and Very Worshipful Owulaku Hood, joined thousands at Manhyia Palace to mourn the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, during her Doteyie rites.
The delegation honored their Grand Patron, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the bereaved brother of the queen mother, in a display of Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.
Dressed in solemn black, the Freemasons offered condolences, with Dr. Omaboe quoting Henry Scott-Holland’s Death is Nothing at All: “I have only slipped away to the next room…
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.” The group donated GHS 105,000 to support community initiatives, reflecting their history of contributions to health and education in Ghana.
The rites, steeped in Asante tradition, saw Otumfuo arrive in a palanquin, clad in black with a leather cap, amid musket fire and ritual displays, reaffirming the Golden Stool’s authority. Mourners, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor and traditional leaders, filled the grounds, showcasing the Asante Kingdom’s cultural and historical significance.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III, enstooled in 2017, was a pivotal figure in Asanteman. Her funeral, banning other rites kingdom-wide, highlighted her legacy and the Asante’s enduring role in Ghana’s identity.
