Freddie Blay Defends Akufo-Addo’s Record, Blames NPP Grassroots Apathy for 2024 Election Loss

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Armah Blay, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to voter apathy among its grassroots base, rather than shortcomings in the Akufo-Addo administration’s performance.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on July 16, 2025, Blay argued that the government excelled in economic management, infrastructure development, and job creation but failed to mobilize its supporters effectively, leading to frustration and low voter turnout.

“Maybe the only thing we failed to do was to carry along our membership, and some got quite frustrated, and therefore refused to go and vote,” Blay stated.

He staunchly defended the Akufo-Addo administration, asserting, “In terms of handling the economy, building infrastructure, and strengthening political and security institutions, hospitals, and education—I think his government did very well.”

He highlighted job creation as a standout achievement, claiming it was unmatched in Ghana’s history.

Blay dismissed criticisms of the administration’s performance, insisting that the NPP’s setbacks stemmed from internal disengagement rather than governance failures.

The 2024 elections saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secure victory, with John Dramani Mahama returning as president, partly due to the NPP’s inability to rally its base amid economic challenges and public discontent.
