The Assin Fosu District Court has remanded four suspects into police custody for eight days over the alleged kidnapping and torture of a 30-year-old resident, Bismark Amo.
The court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Illiasu, granted the remand application after the Police, led by ASP Wonder Lumor, presented six provisional charges against the accused.
The charges are conspiracy to commit crime, kidnapping, threat of harm, non-consensual sharing of an intimate image, causing harm and stealing.
Four suspects in custody
The suspects have been identified as Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School and resident of Breman UGC; Charles Doku, 53, a security guard from Breman UGC; Oteng Baffour, 31, an electrician and resident of Breman UGC; and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, alias Culture, whose age is yet to be confirmed and who is also a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School.
According to the prosecution, the four suspects allegedly held Bismark Amo hostage for close to a week.
The Police further allege that the victim was subjected to severe torture while his family was being pressured to pay GH¢45,000.
The suspects reportedly claimed that Amo had defrauded Mavis Badu Acheampong of the same amount.
Police pursuing fifth suspect
The prosecution told the court that a fifth suspect, described as a senior military officer, is alleged to have orchestrated the kidnapping.
The officer is currently outside Ghana and is being pursued by the Police.
The court has also directed Mavis Badu Acheampong to lodge an official complaint with the Police regarding the alleged fraud.
The four suspects are expected to reappear before the Assin Fosu District Court on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The allegations are yet to be tested in court, and the accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
